READ John chapter 16 and answer these questions (reviewed at Connection Groups on January 12, 2020).

  1. WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE SAY? Jesus prepares his disciples for times he will not physically be with them.
  2. WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE MEAN TO ITS ORIGINAL AUDIENCE? Again and again John has emphasized the divinity of Jesus. Now Jesus speaks of returning to the Father.
  3. WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE TELL US ABOUT GOD? Jesus does not leave his followers leaderless. This is the promise of the Holy Spirit.
  4. WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE TELL US ABOUT MAN? Mankind doesn’t just need a physical king to follow. We need our hearts inhabited by God himself.
  5. WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE DEMAND OF ME? I need to rest in the reality that Jesus has accomplished everything necessary for justification. I also need to rely on the Holy Spirit for direction and sanctification.
  6. HOW DOES THIS PASSAGE CHANGE THE WAY I RELATE TO PEOPLE? When I rely on the Holy Spirit God uses me as his ambassador. While salvation is not just for my sake it’s not just for my sake.
  7. HOW DOES THIS PASSAGE PROMPT ME TO PRAY? Father, help my trust in Jesus grow. Help my reliance on the Holy Spirit flourish.
