READ John chapter 8 and answer these questions (reviewed at Connection Groups on November 17, 2019).
- WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE SAY? Jesus is the Son of God, sent to the Earth by God the Father to reveal man’s problem & God’s provision/solution.
- WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE MEAN TO ITS ORIGINAL AUDIENCE? John’s Jewish audience would have been at fever pitch by the end of chapter 8 with Jesus proclaiming, “I AM”. !!! The Pharisees came hard, but Jesus came harder.
- WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE TELL US ABOUT GOD? God has gone to the greatest lengths to reach out to mankind.
- WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE TELL US ABOUT MAN? To fully appreciate God’s provision men must first realize their deepest problem/need:
– sin < grace (John 8:11)
– darkness < light (John 8:12)
– ignorance < knowledge (John 8:23)
– lies < truth (John 8:31)
– slavery < freedom (John 8:34)
– religion < Jesus (John 8:58) - WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE DEMAND OF ME? I am one of these people God has mercifully reached out to (as listed in number 4). I had all of these soul crushing problems that Jesus lifted. This passage applied to my life demands my eternal allegiance.
- HOW DOES THIS PASSAGE CHANGE THE WAY I RELATE TO PEOPLE? When conversation is brough up about hardships/problems that are really rooted in what I listed above (in number 4), I need to personally point to the “+” of every “-“.
- HOW DOES THIS PASSAGE PROMPT ME TO PRAY? Father, help me be about your business of constantly worshipping Jesus and pointing others to him.
